Australia’s container terminals showed a record level of productivity, according to the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE).

The BITRE report said stevedoring working rates at five major city ports in Australia (Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Fremantle), climbed to 38.4 containers per hour in the December 2007 quarter.

The five-port average crane rate, average productivity per crane, also increased to 27.2 containers from 26.5 containers in the previous quarter. 

Container moves showed a more significant improvement, reaching 1.03 million moves in the December 2007 quarter, up 11.3 per cent on the December 2006 quarter figure.

Meanwhile, the ports experienced increased congestion, with TEU volumes jumping from 898,000 in the September 2006 quarter to 1.23 million for December 2007. This resulted in longer truck and container turnaround times, which were 40.7 minutes and 27.5 minutes respectively.
 
All of the ports saw increased use of off-peak slots. This was especially visible in Melbourne, with use of night slots rising 10 per cent between March and December 2007.
