In July last year Hogan’s Heavy Haulage became one of the first companies to take delivery of a pair of Western Stars with locally fitted Cummins ISX EGR engines. Operating from home base at Wyong on the NSW Central Coast, in addition to another facility further north at Rutherford near Newcastle, the company owns a variety of brands including Western Star, Kenworth, DAF and Mack.
When asked about the motivation to purchase the 4864FXB Western Star prime movers with their locally fitted 580 hp ISX engines, managing director Jason Hogan replied that having the right truck for a specific application is always the top priority rather than remaining loyal to one particular brand.
“We buy each truck for the job we want it to perform,” he stated adamantly. “The 4800 series Western Star is a fair dinkum all-purpose truck – an ideal compromise between a cab-over and long bonneted prime mover.”
Hogan’s has been in operation for 30 years, the business started by Jason’s parents Gary and Yvonne Hogan who initially operated two dozers and bought their first float to haul earthmoving machines between jobs. Over ensuing years, haulage work expanded to become the core business and today the company employs 15 permanent drivers and owns 16 of its own trucks of varying types and sizes as well as engaging 10 sub-contractors.
After completing an apprenticeship as an electrician, Jason Hogan moved into the family business 12 years ago and took over running the operation when his father retired eight years ago. Also working in the business are his wife Jenny and sisters Sonya and Tanya who collectively manage the ever-expanding office workload.
Accepting an invitation to ride in one of the new Stars, I climbed aboard with driver Tony Savage who has been driving trucks for the better part of three decades. As we traveled bobtail for about 20 km to pick up the first load, Tony, also a qualified diesel mechanic, told the story of how he previously ran his own truck repair business and had also owned and operated a number of trucks over the years.
He remarked that he was extremely happy behind the wheel of Hogan’s new Star and was particularly impressed with the space provided by the Stratosphere sleeper cab. His only criticism centred on the electronic throttle control of the engine which he said had a tendency to not supply the fuel as swiftly as earlier mechanically mastered engines. He also commented that fuel economy and driveability of the new truck were better when fully loaded rather than part or lightl... Next Page
