Caterpillar road trucks to be launched in Australia

The first-ever Cat road trucks will be launched in Australia later this year by NC2 Global LLC, the global joint venture between Caterpillar Inc. and Navistar International Corporation.

The products – the Cat CT 610 and CT 630 – are expressly designed and optimised for the Australian market and will be assembled at NC2’s manufacturing facility in Tullamarine, Victoria.

“These Cat trucks have a high degree of durability and reliability that make them uniquely suited to the Australian market,” said Jeff Tyzack, general manager of sales and marketing for NC2 in Australia. “These products will also be powered by Cat engines, which have a reputation for reliability, durability and fuel economy.”

Tyzack provided an overview of the products, which are both conventional prime movers and will be available in day-cab and extended-cab options:

The CT 610, which will be available first, will be powered by the 470 hp Cat C13 engine. With a bumper to back-of-cab (BBC) measurement of 2.72 metres, it will be targeted to 19-metre applications and has a capacity of up to 57 tonnes.

The CT 630, which will be available soon after, will be powered by the 550 hp Cat C15 engine. With a BBC measurement of 3.10 metres, it is suitable for B-double on-highway road train applications and will be available in both 72-tonne and 90-tonne options.

“There is a high level of excitement among Caterpillar’s strong following in Australia, and we look forward to putting these powerful new products into customers’ hands,” Tyzack said.

The products will be sold and serviced by a network of Cat dealers who have been selected based on market coverage, service orientation, experience with servicing Cat engines, and commitment to the on-highway truck market.

Initially, NC2’s Australian dealer network will begin with 54 locations, including six sales, parts and service locations and 48 parts and service locations. Dealers included in the network at this time include Cavpower (South Australia), Hastings Deering (Queensland), WesTrac (New South Wales and Western Australia), and William Adams (Victoria).

“These first-ever Cat on-highway prime movers, geared to the Australian market and supported by over 50 points of service, show the unprecedented power of leveraging Navistar’s truck design and manufacturing expertise and Caterpillar’s powerful global network,” said Al Saltiel, NC2 president.

Saltiel noted that NC2 is pursuing the Australian market in a highly focused manner.

“These initial Cat trucks meet clear customer needs and will be followed by an expanded line-up as we continue to address specific in-market requirements, including the changes in emissions standards coming in 2011,” said Saltiel.
