Swire Cold Storage has completed Phase 3 of its Lurnea (Sydney) cold storage development, with the facility now able to hold 41,795 pallets.
The development of the Lurnea 3 site has involved a phased development of the premises. The first phase of approximately 11,000 spaces was completed in 2006, and two more additions were completed in 2008 and 2009. When combined with the company’s Lurnea 1 & 2 facilities, Swire Cold Storage (SCS) now has over 57,000 refrigerated and 12,000 ambient pallet spaces at Lurnea.
The buildings were designed with significant environmental features, including advanced lighting and energy management systems. Rainwater harvesting on site includes a 1,000,000-litre below-ground and three, 1.1 million-litre (total) capacity above-ground tanks. The harvested rainwater is used in evaporative condensers in the refrigeration plants, whose water demands can be as high as 100,000 litres a day in very hot weather.
