Governments to fast-track new truck technologies

Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and New Zealand will work to fast-track new and emerging safety and environmental technologies for trucks.

The announcement followed the Asia-Pacific transport ministers’ meeting in Melbourne last week, where ministers from across the region met with business representatives including ATA chairman Trevor Martyn and the founder of Linfox, Lindsay Fox AC.

Trevor said that new technologies such as hybrid engines, active braking systems, lane assist and GPS had enormous potential to make the trucking industry safer and more efficient, when used appropriately.

“The ATA will now work with our members and suppliers to submit practical, affordable and fair options to the government to increase the use of these technologies,” Trevor said.

“At the meeting, we particularly discussed Lindsay Fox’s proposal to require black box recorders in commercial vehicles, which would record data about the last few minutes leading up to an accident or incident. Linfox is steadily installing these recorders in its own vehicles.

“The black boxes would enable investigators to pinpoint the causes of accidents and make safety recommendations to stop them from happening again. The data from the recorders would not be admissible in court,” Trevor said.

After the meeting, the delegates headed to Anglesea, where Lindsay Fox introduced them to the Linfox automotive research centre.

“Each and every delegate – including the ministers – drove a prime mover or hybrid vehicle around the test track. I believe the delegates left with a much greater appreciation of the challenges facing truck drivers and the new technologies becoming available,” Trevor said.

The meeting was hosted by the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Anthony Albanese, and was initiated by Lindsay Fox.
