Forklift drivers from around Australia will test their knowledge and skills to a set of rules within set timeframes. The competition focuses on safety, accuracy of positioning loads all against the clock. No one wants a forklift accident in their workplace or a fatality. The larger companies will have a series of in-house competitions and the “best of the best” will represent their company. To add further interest, a team event and a novelty activity is also planned.
This event continues to grow and is becoming a change agent for many companies to raise forklift safety awareness and is a national benchmark to compare their operators with others nationally. October 28 is the date for the final in Sydney but before that date heats will be held around Australia. Anyone with a valid fork licence is eligible to compete in the heats.
Women operators are really competitive in a predominantly male industry and have proved that they are equally successful in the operation of a ‘fork’. The 2009 female champion, Anita Maliu from Woolworths, will defend her title at the Sydney final. The number of women entrants continues to grow and are proving to be proficient operators. Watch out guys!
In 2010 forklift training and assessment will move from the Accredited Provider system to the VET sector. Registered training organisations will be the only way a person can become trained and licenced in forklift operation and many other types of plant and equipment. This will create a deal of confusion while it’s in transition. Many current operators may not be competent under this new system of licencing.
The forklifts used in the competition will be brand new and use the latest technology and safety systems. The judges are ready and keen to start judging the heats.
