With continuing tension between the two stevedores and the container transport industry, Joe Tripodi is being remembered as the man who drove the Port Botany Logistics Improvement Strategy (PBLIS).
The manager of ATA (Australian Trucking Association) NSW, Jill Lewis, thanked Joe Tripodi for his work as the previous Minister for Ports.
“Joe Tripodi was a good minister. We didn’t always agree, but he was always willing to engage in a healthy debate and was determined to see reforms made to the port,” Ms Lewis said.
As truck drivers suffered yet another day of unexplained delays, this time in excess of two hours at DP World on Tuesday morning, the industry is calling for the next stage of PBLIS to be implemented without delay: penalties for non-performance by stevedores.
Patrick and DP World have gone outside the PBLIS consultation process to introduce storage charges for Sundays, despite having limited and inconsistent opening hours for road transport deliveries on weekends. In addition, empty container parks and most customers do not open on weekends, causing transport companies to have to schedule multiple runs, all without extra income.
The chairman of the ATA NSW Container Sub-committee, Mike Moylan, said the trucking industry hoped to work closely with the new minister, Paul McLeay to resolve a series of issues affecting trucking operations at Port Botany.
“In recent times, trucking operators have been forced to queue for up to five hours to pick up containers at the port,” Mr Moylan said.
“ATA NSW will be seeking an early meeting with Minister McLeay to discuss the continuation of the PBLIS process driven by Sydney Ports Corporation, and in particular:
How the Government can keep the stevedoring companies up to the mark, with former Ports Minister Joe Tripodi foreshadowing the possibility of legislation to improve their efficiency;
Imposing penalty charges on the stevedores for poor performance and getting empty container parks open 24/5 to meet demand;
How the vehicle booking system can be reformed to deliver realistic turnaround times and operational efficiency; and
The provision at the port of truck parking and basic civilised amenities like toilets for trucks and drivers arriving from the country.
