New Bathurst Intermodal Terminal to fill void in Central West
The freight logistics void left by the closure of Patrick’s intermodal terminal in Bathurst, NSW is to be remedied by a new terminal to be developed on the outskirts of the city.
The developer, Gateway Land Corporation, is expecting imminent approval from the New South Wales Government for a brand new facility on the Great Western Highway,
4 km to the east at Kelso. Part of a 30-hectare commercial site with a kilometre of Highway frontage, the intermodal terminal has been designed to accommodate longer [600 metre] length trains with a ‘run-around’ track to facilitate quicker turnaround times.
The site will also have approval for almost 50,000 sqm of warehousing facilities with hardstand and direct rail loading access. The intermodal facility itself will have the ability to accommodate services such as on-site customs, grain silos, loco maintenance, fuel storage, truck re-fuelling and truck wash.
According to Gateway’s development director Bob Walsh, having such a large site, and being able to be designed with few physical constraints, the facility will have several major advantages over the competing facilities in the region and enable it to operate far more efficiently.
“Our quicker turnaround times will enable 24-hr return journeys to Port Botany – something the other facilities in the region cannot achieve. Our location is also well away from any schools or residential areas, avoiding the traffic, noise, lighting and other environmental issues that plagued the Patrick’s site,” said Walsh.
Gateway Land Corporation is hopeful of getting the new facility up and running by the end of 2010 and is currently in discussion with potential terminal operators. The majority of the warehousing facilities will be designed and built to suit specific user demand. Gateway can be contacted on (02) 9943 5044.
