Canberra Airport curfew turned into political stunt
Politicians have refused to vote on a proposed curfew at Canberra Airport, arguing the proposal was pointless.
None of the Government senators voted on the motion put forward by Greens leader Bob Brown to impose a curfew on the international freight hub in federal parliament yesterday.
The Opposition voted against the motion and four of the five Greens have voted in favour.
Liberal senator Gary Humphries told parliament that the Coalition and ACT Liberals did not believe the imposition of a curfew would benefit the region’s economy or community wellbeing.
“We do not feel there’s any need to pursue a course that would threaten the economic development of Canberra and Australia as a whole.
“The Coalition doesn’t feel that this motion will contribute anything towards protection of residents and feels it has much more to do with the election this coming Saturday,” he said.
A spokesman for Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese told Fairfax that the Government did not see the need for a curfew at Canberra Airport.
