FreightLink, the owner and operator of the Adelaide-Darwin railway, said it could be sold within a fortnight.
Speaking at the Northern Gateways conference in Darwin, the company’s general manager of business operations Tony Aldridge said its bidder selection process was nearly completed.
“At this stage we are working through a series of bidders," he told the ABC.
"We've had some very-very good bids and we would probably be in a position to have a preferred bidder within the next fortnight.”
The company was put up for sale this May.
Also proposed at the conference was the development of regional food hubs to help lower grocery costs in remote Northern Territory communities.
Mr Aldridge said rail has the potential to reduce costs, particularly in the territory where a factor of long distances come into play.
“We still think there's a lot of opportunity for us to service communities and locations like Mataranka,” he said.
“At the moment we're largely dealing with our key transport centres in Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Darwin and Katherine, and what we're looking for is the opportunity to go one step further and see if we can create regional hubs to be able to deliver freight from there to other communities.”
